The Bone Collector is an excellent film that gets rated lower than it should for one reason. Those who have read the book tear it apart because it is not exactly like the book and I don't think that is fair.
I loved the movie when it came out and I loved it again today, many years after the first watch. Angelina Jolie was in her prime and she uses a convincing New York accent, although she does seem to pause at odd moments, like she's figuring out what to do next.
Denzel Washington is perfect as the handicapped crime fighter, who assists the cops in solving some of the more complicated crimes from his home, complete with some digital assistance, though rudimentary by today's standards. Queen Latifah very competently plays Denzel's home-care assistant, although this role is a departure from the book and seems to be a big sticking point according to the literary crowd.
If you are interested in crime stories, or have an interest in New York history, it's an "A" movie for certain and holds up to today's standards for the most part. My only complaint was how some of the outdoor daylight scenes appeared to be shot on the wrong type of film, or blue-matte filtered way too much and too dark, but The Bone Collector easily remains on my Top list. Loved that this has 2 rising stars in it. They are both great in this film! I love Denzel Washington.
Don't care for Angelina Jolie, but I actually liked her in this. Gets a bit gory at times, leaves you holding your breath at others. If you're squeamish about rats, don't watch the scenes with the guy in the bar. Some twists and turns, good mystery, surprise ending. Give it a view! See all reviews. Denzel plays a quadraplegic who is allowed to continue investigating murders even though he is bed ridden.
He alone can see the potential in a rookie cop [Angelina] and he is allowed to use her to investigate a series of murders whilst he maintains control via modern day electronics. They must pay police officers an awful lot in the US.
The murder scenes are realistically grisly but the roles of Denzel and Angelina and the way the rest of the police force fawn over them made me press the eject button before seeing all the film.
As always the book far exceeds the movie. In the movie most of the story that Deavers penned has been omitted thus making this a fairly short film. If you read the novel you will see that during the first 24 hours of the plot at least 3 more murders are committed by the Bone Collectors.
The collector abducts a young mother and her daughter and keeps them in a gringy basement building, but the police women working with Rimes is able to solve the clues and save them. The old man that the collector shoves into a pipe that is slowly filling up with sea water as the tide rises is also rescued just in time, but this is missed out in the film.
As is the young boy that is held by the BC in the basement of his safe house and has been left to be eaten by a pack of wild abandoned dogs by the heroine and the NYPD ESU. In the book the story is also linked to a possible terrorist attack on a UN conference and the eventual perpetrator of this attack is the young mother that they rescued from the collector.
This movie detracts from teh book in a zillion ways, even down to the finer details. In the book his nurse and therapist is a man named Thom, but in the movie it is a woman.

Verified Purchase. Jeffry Deaver is one of the best thriller writers there is. The Bone Collector, the first of the Lincoln Rhyme novels is certainly no exception.
Although Lincoln Rhyme, formerly head of the Investigation and Resource Division of the New York City Police Department, is now a quadriplegic and can only move his head and done finger, there is no lack of action and tension in this gripping story. When the department asks for his help again with a case, Rhyme reluctantly agrees to help them try to solve it.
He appears to know almost everything about everything, and to be able to decipher clues from the most microscopic evidence. With the help of patrolwoman Amelia Sachs, his personal aide Thom, a crime-scene tech, and the two detectives who lured him into working on the case to begin with, Rhyme unravels all the clues through the most unexpected twists.
He must overcome obstacles raised by the political establishment, the FBI, and even his own reluctance, as well as the traps set by the perpetrator to finally solve the case. I might be that some time spent in law enforcement a long time ago has left me jaded here, but I don't usually have as much difficulty suspending disbelief as I did with this one.
The scenarios, explanations, dialogue, characters, and everything else involved in the story are absolutely and ridiculously unbelievable. I mean, they are DUMB! I can't believe there were so many positive reviews of this drivel. Lincoln Rhyme is supposed to be a curmudgeon, I get it, but he comes across as simply unlikeable just for kicks, I might go back into the text and count how many times he "barks" his responses to people.
Couple the distasteful main character with the fact that he annoyingly has a pat and ready answer for absolutely every piece of evidence that is presented to him and the result is a farce.
I finished the book because I wanted to see if it would get better This would have been a one-star review, but I gave it a second star for finally coming to an end. Lincoln Rhyme is a very intriguing character in his own right.

Amelia Donaghy, a newly recruited patrol officer, discovers a mutilated corpse buried at a Civil War -era railroad bed. Due to clue-like objects found at the crime scene, Rhyme concludes that the scene was staged and subsequently teams up with an initially hesitant Amelia, impressed by her natural forensic instincts. The killer poses as a taxi driver and, prior to Rhyme and Amelia meeting, abducts married couple Alan and Lindsay Rubin.
Alan is the body discovered by Amelia at the railroad station, while Lindsay is revealed to be alive and tied up at a steam junction. Using the clues found at the railroad bed, including a torn piece of scrap paper, Rhyme successfully tracks the whereabouts of Lindsay.
The detectives and Amelia arrive too late and she is scalded to death by an open steam pipe. Amelia finds a piece of Lindsay's bone by her body and another scrap of paper. Rhyme instructs Amelia to sever Lindsay's hands, which are securely chained to the pipe, for evidence but she refuses and storms off from the crime scene. The killer abducts an NYU student, who is taken to a derelict slaughterhouse and tied to a pole. The killer surgically removes a piece of bone from the student, leaving an open wound that attracts nearby rats.
Amelia and Rhyme, again using the clues left by the killer at the scene of the previous murder, find the victim's body which has been mutilated by rats. Amelia finds another scrap of paper and a piece of bone. The pressure of the tense investigation and bureaucratic challenges to Amelia and Rhyme's involvement in the case begin to have serious impacts on Rhyme's health and stability. Thelma, Rhyme's personal carer and nurse, reveals to Amelia that he intends to euthanise himself out of fear of seizures that could leave him in a vegetative state.
After piecing together the message the killer was sending using the scrap paper left at each scene, Amelia and Rhyme are led to an old crime novel called The Bone Collector , where it is revealed the killer is replicating the crimes from the fictional story. This leads them to the killer's next victims, a grandfather and granddaughter who have been tied to a pier during a rise in tide.
